Riding a 125cc with a Belgian car licence (code 372)

Licence3 min read

With a Belgian car licence (category B), you can ride a motorcycle up to 125 cc in Belgium without a motorcycle exam. You need code 372 on your licence, or a B licence issued before 1 May 2011. This article is not legal advice; the official sources are listed at the end. Checked on 14 October 2026.

What code 372 allows

Code 372 is added to category B on your licence. It lets you ride an A1 vehicle in Belgium only:

  • a motorcycle up to 125 cc and 11 kW, with a power-to-weight ratio of at most 0.1 kW/kg;
  • or a motor tricycle up to 15 kW.

It does not give you an A1 licence.

Conditions

B licence issued What you may ride in Belgium What you need to do
from 1 May 2011 A1 (125 cc), with code 372 hold B for 2 years, take 4 hours of lessons, have the code added
before 1 May 2011 A1 (125 cc) nothing
before 31 December 1988 A1, A2 and A, no power limit (per vlaanderen.be) nothing

For a licence from 1 May 2011:

  1. Hold your B licence for at least 2 years.
  2. Take 4 hours of practical lessons at an approved driving school.
  3. Take your licence to your municipality to have code 372 added.

There is no theory exam and no practical exam.

Cost

Prices checked on 14 October 2026. The 4-hour package costs €360 (Feu Vert, Wavre), €380 (De Motorrijschool), €400 plus €30 registration (Auto-École Européenne, Brussels), €443 (Rijschool Mercator) or €475 (Rijschool Oudenaarde). Ask your municipality whether it charges to add the code. Your 125 cc must be registered and insured.

Limits

  • Belgium only. With a B licence you may ride a motorcycle in Belgium only. Abroad, including a short trip across the border, you need an A1, A2 or A licence.
  • Not an A1 licence. Progressive access to A2 requires 2 years of A1. Code 372 does not count, so for A2 you take the normal route: theory exam, lessons and practical exam.
  • 125 cc and 11 kW maximum. Anything larger or more powerful is not covered.

Code 372 or a full licence?

Choose code 372 if you ride only in Belgium and do not plan a larger motorcycle. Choose A1 if you want to ride abroad or move up later through progressive access. Choose A2 if you are 20 or older and want more power. See which licence fits you.

Not every school offers the code 372 lessons. Use our driving-school finder and ask when you book. If you have never ridden before, 4 hours is short: consider extra lessons or one of our motorcycle trainings.
